No Heat

Heat that has stopped in the middle of a cold snap moves ahead of routine work, so call in and mention how long the house has been without it.

When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

The order of checks matters more than any single one. Power and fuel account for the majority of outright no-heat calls, and both are quick to confirm: the disconnect switch, the breaker, the tank level, and whether an outage left the equipment locked out on restart. Where a generator carried the house through a storm, an ignition control fed on rough power sometimes needs resetting before it will run again. From there the sequence runs to the thermostat circuit, then the safety chain, since limits, low-water cutoffs, and pressure switches are designed to stop a system and frequently have. The reason a safety opened is the actual repair. Resetting it is only the last step, and it doesn't mean much on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Some controls latch out after abnormal power and need a manual reset, and a generator's less-than-clean output can be enough to put a sensitive ignition board into that state.
It can in the right conditions, particularly with heavy draw in extreme cold and moisture in the system, and the equipment then behaves exactly as though the tank were empty.
Resetting it once tells you something. If it opens again, it's reporting a real condition, and finding what triggered it is the repair rather than the reset itself.
It depends on how tight the house is and how cold it is outside, but an older place in serious cold can put exposed plumbing in trouble well before a full day has passed.
